Çin'den İthalatta Ödeme Yöntemleri: Hangisi Daha Güvenli?

You are ordering products from China for the first time. The supplier has confirmed the price, and you are satisfied with the samples. Now you need to make a payment — but how?

Choosing the wrong payment method can lead to both losing your money and your product. In this article, we explained the main payment methods used in importing from China along with their advantages and risks.

1. T/T (Telegraphic Transfer / Bank Transfer)

This is the most commonly used payment method in importing from China. The buyer transfers the amount directly to the supplier's bank account.

The standard practice is as follows:

  • 30% upfront — paid upon order confirmation

  • 70% before shipment — paid when the product is ready, prior to loading

Advantages: Fast, low-cost, universal

Risks: The amount paid upfront cannot be recovered if the supplier runs away. Be cautious with suppliers you are working with for the first time.

2. Letter of Credit (L/C)

This is a secured payment method carried out through a bank. The buyer's bank guarantees that the payment will be made to the seller when certain conditions are met.

Advantages: It is secure for both parties. If the documents are correct, the payment occurs automatically.

Risks: It is costly and bureaucratic. It is not practical for small orders. It is generally preferred for orders over 50,000 USD.

3. Alibaba Trade Assurance

This is a payment assurance system offered for orders made through the Alibaba platform. Payment is made to Alibaba's escrow account and is transferred to the seller after the product is received.

Advantages: It provides the option to return if the product does not arrive or there is a serious quality issue. It is suitable for small and medium orders.

Risks: The dispute resolution process can take a long time. It does not apply to suppliers outside of Alibaba.

4. PayPal

This can be used for small payments. Buyer protection is available, but the commission rate is high (3.5–5%).

Chinese factories generally do not accept PayPal. It is more commonly encountered when dealing with small-scale sellers.

5. Western Union / MoneyGram

Absolutely not recommended. Once the money is sent, it cannot be recovered. It is the payment method most preferred by scammers.

Which Method to Choose?

  • First order, small amount: Alibaba Trade Assurance

  • Reliable supplier, medium size: T/T (30% + 70%)

  • Large order, high risk: Letter of Credit (L/C)

  • Definitely avoid: Western Union, MoneyGram, 100% upfront T/T

Golden Rules for Safe Payment

  • Never make 100% upfront payment for the first order

  • Verify bank account details directly instead of via email

  • Sign a contract before making payment

  • Complete quality control before shipment

  • Verify the supplier's company information

Conclusion

Payment security in importing from China is as important as supplier selection. Choosing the right payment method protects both your money and your product.

Working with a sourcing team on-site in China is the most practical way to minimize payment risks.
